It's all in how you look at it

Over the last few months I've learned a lot about adjusting expectations and changing how I look at things.  For example, some people might say my yard is full of weeds and I should do something about it.  I prefer to look at it as we're going green and growing our own rabbit food.  We also have a huge pile of junk in the backyard that may or may not look slightly white trash.  Instead of focusing on the fact that it's a breeding ground for tetanus, I think of it as a pile of stuff that may one day save our lives because, as I was told last weekend, if there is ever a zombie apocalypse, we have an oil drum stand on which to put a barrel full of gasoline.  Nevermind that we don't have a store of gas lying around-we can siphon it from other people's cars.  So you see . . . you can choose to focus on the negative or you can change your perspective and be grateful for what you've got.  It's all about perspective!

When the kids are fighting or being difficult....it's "Oh, arent they all just such independent leaders! No followers here!"

Nah, I look at it as an opportunity to send them to bed and give me some peace and quiet.

First of all- Congratulations Kim!

Secondly, you're right about perspective. Our property is so far from the civilized life we grew up with in Orem. I miss concrete sidewalks, manicured lawns and lovely flower beds. So when I look at the natural wildness and the man caused havoc (from our attempts at "improvements") I remind myself that it's probably going to take 30 years. And then I breathe. And I enjoy going home to visit my parents! But I love my wild land way more than the crowded city, even if it does embarrass me sometimes.

My kids are "leaders" too. Such strong little wills. But it sounds like you are doing an amazing job adjusting!

The picture you have of the kids on face book looks like you must have a couple of sets of twins?! What is the make-up of your family now?

No twins, just three sets of kids that are close together. They're 9, 8, 6, 5, 2 and 1. I don't know if I could have had them all myself like you've done. Having the older kids to help out with the littles makes such a big difference. People keep asking me if I think I'll have any of my own and seriously, at this point, what are a couple more?!?

For the most part I've adjusted well, but I most definitely have my moments. The less I see my husband, the grumpier I tend to get, so potato harvest starting this week has been rough. I guess that's why I started blogging again-it's like therapy!

I need to go back and reread your FB message from a couple of months ago. Now that I've got the internet hooked up and things have settled down a little bit, I'll actually have time to respond!
